We continue to learn more about Clifford Castle, and its history almost every month. Many questions remain unanswered.
- What was the true purpose of the Hornwork north west of the current Castle?
- How much of the structure was ‘restored’ in the 1920s or by the Victorians, in pursuit of a romantic ruin?
- Was there a postern gate at the northwest end of the hall?
- Was the Great Hall even ever a great Hall, or simply communal living quarters for the military garrison?
As an example, an archaeological dig in 2018 revealed that the raised ground level in the keep courtyard was largely due to salvaged stone having been neatly stacked there and covered with soil in previous centuries!
